OPEN COUNTRY MAG’s first 14 months produced results that were unprecedented in the African literary scene, and that met our mission to publish essential, in-depth stories from the continent, and to contextualize them in the global conversation through literary journalism as good as any elsewhere.
We were fortunate to secure exclusive cover stories with the most important African writers at work today: from Tsitsi Dangarembga (Dec. 2020) and Maaza Mengiste (Jan. 2021) to Teju Cole (Jul. 2021) and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Sept. 2021), and, early this year, Damon Galgut (Feb. 2022), after his Booker Prize win.
The covers were minimalist in design, modest: greyscale images with unicolour text. And white.
For our debut special issue, THE NEXT GENERATION (April 2022), which profiles 16 writers and curators who influenced literary culture in the last six years, we found a new aesthetic: our long name initialed to OCM, embedded in rich green ankara. It is the work of the multidisciplinary designer Emeka Ugwu.
As we approach our second anniversary this December, we are now reissuing our previous five covers in our new style: boldly colourful, audacious, maximalist to the T: an attitude that better represents our next direction.

Reissuing our covers is part of our rebranding, which began with our new logo, with its serif, sans serif, and gothic typefaces.
Our new identity is localized and internationalist, vibrant and futuristic, and, above all, unique.
We love it, and hope that you, our readers, do, too.
