Saraba Magazine is pleased to announce that Tolu Daniel has joined us as Editor-at-Large, with focus on curating and editing nonfiction.
In this role, Tolu Daniel will help shape Saraba’s nonfiction publishing, working with writers and commissioning work across the breadth of the form – from essays and criticism to memoir, cultural writing, and more experimental approaches to nonfiction.
His appointment comes as Saraba Magazine continues to build on its long history of publishing ambitious writing from Africa and its diasporas. Since its founding in 2009, the magazine has been a space for emerging and established writers to experiment, take risks and produce work attentive to both literary craft and the world around us.
As Editor-at-Large, Tolu Daniel will bring his editorial perspective to Saraba’s nonfiction while contributing more broadly to the magazine’s evolving editorial vision.
Saraba editor Zenas Ubere said, “We are delighted to welcome Tolu to Saraba. Nonfiction has always been an important part of the magazine, and we want to give it greater space, range and ambition. Tolu is a writer and editor whose curiosity and sensibility make him an exciting person to help us imagine what nonfiction at Saraba can become.”
Tolu Daniel said, “Saraba has been an important part of my journey towards becoming the type of writer I am today, so taking on this role feels both meaningful and full of possibility. I am excited to contribute to a magazine whose history is bound up with the possibilities of African writing, and to help create room for new voices, unexpected conversations, and work that challenges how we think about literature and the worlds it makes possible. I look forward to being part of Saraba’s next chapter.”
The appointment forms part of Saraba’s renewed publishing programme following the magazine’s revival, with new work, editorial projects and opportunities for writers to be announced in the coming months.
