The Nigerian authors Uwem Akpan and Helon Habila will be in conversation on Zoom to discuss the former’s new book New York, My Village. The book, which is Uwem Akpan’s debut novel, comes 13 years after his 2008 story collection Say You’re One of Them.
Published by WW Norton, New York, My Village is the story of Ekong Udousoro, a Nigerian editor who wins a publishing fellowship in Manhattan, New York City. Udousoro is exposed to both the good and bad sides of the publishing industry—as well as larger issues in the American system, including racism.
At the same time, Udousoro’s people in Nigeria are suffering the effects of the Biafran War of 1967-70 and, in a bid to come to terms with the situation, Udousoro decides to curate a collection of stories about the war.
